Derbyshire based Contract Electronics Manufacturer Kingfield Electronics has increased turnover by 25% during the last year despite increasing competition from offshore manufacturers?

Nick Taylor, Managing Director discusses the Box Build philosophy and the strategy for the year ahead.

Our position has always been in the low to medium volume, high quality, high reliability sector of the market, however unlike many other CEM's who primarily provide PCB assembly services, we have always maintained the stance of providing completed, turnkey solutions to our customers. This means that the Company is primarily a dedicated box builder, and its systems, infrastructure and personnel are all orientated towards that goal. We almost consider populating PCB's to be a means to end, and whilst we have extensive PCB assembly capabilities in-house, the vast majority of our productive output is as finished, completed solutions.

Its clear that our customers require optimum quality with minimum cost, and part of our role as their manufacturing partner is to help them achieve this. Naturally, we continually assess how we can rationalize the manufacturing process, improve quality and efficiency, and drive down cost, but we really have to go beyond this if we are to enable our customers to stay one step ahead of the game. Underpinning our commitment to this goal is a dedicated ERP solution, written and developed in house, which allows us to customize our approach to each individual customers needs. Sophisticated workflow and process mapping software enables finite production plans to be created, and thereby removes the risk of certain problems occurring. We live in the "real" world where things don't always go according to plan, and this ability to react to, and cope with unforeseen change is fundamental to our abilities as an agile Manufacturing Partner. Electronic work instructions permit real time changes to be managed efficiently, and enables multi-variant, multi-configuration product to built without the risk of incorrectly built and configured product ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Given the strategic partnerships that we have in place with our customers, we are delivering increased performance with year on year cost reductions, and in many cases customers have zero touch time on their products as they are configured and dispatched directly from ourselves. As we are handling their material procurement, assembly, inspection, test and dispatch activities, it enables customers to focus on their core strengths, typically that of design and marketing, which in turn can only have considerable benefits for them.
